Where Is Photography Going? Documentary Photography in the Age of AI

AI produces photographs in a few seconds. Will that kill documentary photography? No, quite the opposite.

What AI cannot produce is witness. Standing in front of a face in Yemen that carries the marks of war, waiting for the invisible people in the crowds of Paris, becoming part of the scene in different corners of the world. These are not data; they are experience.

The more images are generated, the more the real ones are worth. Someone looking at a documentary photograph looks at it knowing that the moment really happened. That is why they stop and look.

That is where the value of documentary photography has always come from. However far AI develops, it cannot be there in that moment.
