How I Shoot Documentary Photography on the Street

The biggest misconception about street photography is that it is about speed. For me it is the opposite. I stop somewhere and wait — sometimes five minutes, sometimes half an hour. The scene comes to me; I don't try to go to the scene.

Waiting

Waiting is not wasted time. While you wait the light changes, people come and go, the place shows you its own rhythm. I become part of that rhythm. The photograph often comes just when I am about to give up.

Being invisible

When people notice the photographer, they start to pose. At that moment documentary photography is over. A small camera, a calm stance, being there as if you live there.

On the streets of Paris, in Yemen and in different corners of the world, I follow the same rule: I try to make people feel not that I am there, but that I live there.
